History The population growth of people in Nigeria started from the antiquity of Slavery, Tribes and Culture. Slavery was common in Nigeria long before the Europeans arrived. Slavery also known as â€Å"slave trade† started in Badagry, the second largest commercial town in Lagos, Nigeria. In the early 1500’s, people were being transported from Nigeria through Badagry, to North and South America. Slaves were brought from all corners and crannies of Nigeria mostly from raided villages and captives of war, who were also brought to Badagry for auctioning. Some of the main slavery countries from Europe that engaged in the slavery of Nigerians were England, Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands. The slave trade became a major source of income for the Europeans. It is reported that Badagry conveyed no fewer than 550,000 Africans slaves to America during the period of the American Independence in 1787.
